Handmade Macrame Condom

Handmade Macrame Condom

Year: 2006
Technique: cotton thread, cm 170 x 60

Around 3 km of cotton thread is embroidered to give shape to a giant condom.
Four women separately crochet a meticulous lace made of the same pattern. A fifth woman who takes all the pieces, join them together. A ritual is born.
In order to achieve the desired shape, they have to repeat the same gesture for thousands times.
In Handmade Macramé Condom the phallic symbolism is mixed with an old feminine tradition of making table centre decorations.
The sexual climax involves the same repeating gesture.
Ironically, in here, this condom, which commonly symbolizes sexual protection, preserves only the idea of repetitive gestures.
As in other works of mine, the iteration of the same movement becomes a sort of therapy for the mind, a mantra, while the body remains only a mechanical device.
Installed in Galleria di San Marco of Bevilacqua la Masa Foundation for 90ma Collettiva, and also for the collective exhibition of Arte Laguna Prize in 2008.
